Solar PPA Self-Assessment Find out if a zero-capital solar agreement is right for your business
A Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) installs a commercial solar system on your building at no cost to your business. You purchase the electricity it generates at a rate below your current grid tariff - saving money from day one. Work through the 21 statements below to see how well suited your site and business are to this model.

1Your Property and Roof
We have at least 300m2 of available roof or ground space suitable for solar panels
Roughly equivalent to a building footprint of around 1,700 sq ft
The roof structure can support additional load - it was built after 2000, or a structural survey has been completed
The roof covering is in good condition with at least 10 years of serviceable life remaining
The roof faces south, east or west - within roughly 45 degrees of due south
North-facing roofs tend to produce limited yield - worth a conversation before ruling anything out
4Your Business Circumstances
We own the building, or hold a lease with at least 15 years remaining
Standard PPA terms run 15-25 years - the agreement needs to fit within your tenure
If we lease, our landlord is open to the conversation - or we own the freehold outright
There are no plans to sell the building, carry out major works, or trigger a lease break within the next three years
The business is UK VAT-registered
This affects how the PPA rate is structured - we can explain the detail when we speak
2Your Energy Profile
Our annual electricity consumption is above 100,000 kWh, or our electricity bill is above £20,000 per year
Smaller sites can still qualify in the right circumstances - it's always worth checking
The business runs during daylight hours and uses significant electricity between 7am and 6pm
We pay our own electricity bills directly - they are not rolled into a service charge or included in our rent
Our current electricity unit rate is 20p/kWh or above
Higher tariffs mean stronger savings - and a more compelling case for the funder
5Planning and Permissions
The building is not listed (Category A, B or C in Scotland / Grade I or II in England)
Listed buildings need consent - it adds steps but doesn't always prevent a project
The building is not in a conservation area where roof or elevation works are restricted
There are no planning conditions, title covenants or restrictions on roof alterations currently in place
3Grid and Connection
We have a three-phase electricity supply, or the capacity to upgrade before installation
Single-phase sites may still work for smaller systems - we can advise
We know who our Distribution Network Operator is: SP Energy Networks or SSEN in Scotland
There are no known grid constraints or connection refusals at this site or in the immediate area
6Decision and Timeline
The person completing this assessment has the authority to progress the conversation, or direct access to the person who does
Board or senior management approval for a long-term energy agreement is achievable within the business
PPA agreements require director-level authority to sign - we help you build the internal case
We are open to reviewing a long-term agreement - typically 15 to 25 years - if the savings case is strong
Agreements can be assigned if you sell the building - this is rarely the barrier it first appears
